Oh, and did I mention the world youвЂ™re creating will be struck by a meteor? Unless you progress to the point that you can counteract it and donвЂ™t destroy the environment in the process, of course. ItвЂ™s a survival game, but you need to work together with other players to do so.

So what is it, exactly? ItвЂ™s a building game. And itвЂ™s still pushing ahead today as an early-access title on Steam. IвЂ™ve been trying to come up with a better description ever since.ДЄ little backstory: In 2015, Eco doubled its Kickstarter goal of $100,000, and while this sum is a far cry from the totals raised by more famous personalities, it was enough to get the project going. My initial impression of the game was that itвЂ™s Minecraft on steroids, but after more playtime, I feel that term doesnвЂ™t do justice to this little-known gem. The game was recently the subject of a Whatever Happened To entry on this very site, an article that coincidently went live the same day I purchased and started playing the game with an established online community. But for now - it's probably worth a short check if that works for you, but this game is for a very niche player.IвЂ™ve been struggling to come up with a succinct way to describe Eco. And I understand that the core idea, which I really like, added those restrictions to the core mechanics that make the game boring sometimes.ДЄs it is Early Access, I do really hope that something in the game will be changed fundamentally, to bring more 'short-term' fun in game, like, you know, killing a dragon or protecting your mega-city from cataclysms with your 9000IQ engineering. It is a nice looking, well-balanced, feature rich game.

I do love it in a way and think it deserves much more attention. I cannot, however, say I do not recommend this game. Not saying you can't play with friends - but it's not that good when played that way. You can mine and craft, but it wouldn't be good as Minecraft - you got the idea, right?ДЄ big problem also introduced by the fact that it's mass-multiplayer focused game, where you need to find a lot of people that are ready to daily join and invest their time in a game in order for this game to work as it should. You can do politics and people interaction in game, but it wouldn't be as enjoyable as in strategy or deceit games. It is true, you can build nice cities in the game, but it wouldn't be as nice as in building games, and you have to deal with penalties the game does. So by the end of the day Eco turns to be just a very grindy, slow paced game, in the bad means of grind. The game even discourages you from having fun in a way: building a lot means a lot of pollution, and a lot of pollution is bad. It might take real weeks to get negative feedback, and in that week you will have to argue with your friends who just want to build stuff and have fun. This doesn't allow the feedback loop to be short: both politics and ecological problems are developing on a long term and usually very frustrating to deal with. In Eco, your antagonists are other people and ecology. You do good, good happens, you do bad - bad happens, et cetera. You didn't secure your base well - it will be ruined quickly. You go unprepared to the boss - you get killed and lose XP. You see, in other games, the feedback cycle is usually short. In other words, if it's fun for you to play Eco with friends, you might be just chatting with them and that would be equally fun for you. Well, it depends on your multiplayer experience, right, but this game does not do anything for your multiplayer experience to be fun. TL DR: For now, get this game only if you enjoy playing on mass multiplayer servers, and you are ok with grind.Д®co is a very nice, well-crafted game that missing a very important part of being a game: it's not fun to play.
